After the INDIA bloc stopped the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from reaching the majority-mark of 272, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called for the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi should immediately resign as he has lost credibility, said Mamata in an address on Tuesday evening.

All of the exit polls were proven to be grossly incorrect as it became clear soon after the counting of votes became that the BJP would not reach the majority-mark of 272. All of the exit polls had predicted that the BJP would comfortably win at least 300 seats, with some predicted that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would cross the 350-mark.

As the INDIA bloc limited the BJP’s march, Mamata sharply attacked Modi and slammed his “arrogance”.

Mamata also noted that the BJP has lost even in Ayodhya despite the massive infrastructural push in the district and the consecration ceremony of Ram Mandir that the party expected would generate a surge in party’s support.

“What’s the situation on Modi Ji’s seat? He was losing in postal ballots from what I heard. Previously, he won by 5 lakh votes. What has happened now? Such arrogance is not good for anyone, not even for us,” said Mamata in Hindi.

Mamata further said, “Even after all these atrocities, INDIA has won and Modi has lost.”

In West Bengal that Mamata rules, her party Trinamool Congress (TMC) beat the exit polls’ predictions by a large margin. While most polls said that the contest would be even between the two parties if not in BJP’s favour, the latest figures carried by CNN-News 18 suggest that the TMC was ahead on 30 seats and the BJP was just ahead on 11.
