The voting for the 175 assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 on May 13. Results for both will be declared today.
The numbers : The Andhra Pradesh assembly, which has 175 seats, requires a majority of 88 seats to form the government. The voting for the state assembly elections was held in a single phase on May 13.
The past : In the 2019 elections, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) had swept the state with 151 seats in the 175-member Assembly. It had received 49.9 per cent vote share.
The fight : This year, Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy is up against the alliance of former Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Jana Sena – all part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The state Congress is, meanwhile, led by his younger sister YS Sharmila.
The share : Under the seat-sharing arrangement of the NDA, TDP was allocated 144 assembly segments, the BJP fielded candidates on 10 seats and Janasena Party contested 21 seats.
The prediction : Exit polls have predicted a win for the TDP and the NDA, over the incumbent YSRCP. According to TV5 Telugu, TDP is likely to win over 161 seats in the state, while YSRCP could get restricted to 14. Axis My India exit poll too has projected a win for the TDP-BJP-JSP alliance giving it as many as 120 out of 175 seats in the state Assembly.
