According to court records released on Monday, the British government stated that it plans to start deporting asylum seekers on July 23. However, the contentious plan is contingent on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative parties winning the next election.
One of Sunak’s signature policies is to transfer asylum seekers who arrived in Britain to the country in East Africa; however, due to parliamentary and legal impediments, this policy has never taken off.
Although Sunak is now lagging the opposition Labour Party by almost 20 points in surveys and it has pledged to rescind the plan, Sunak recently stated that the deportation planes will not depart before the election on July 4. However, he has guaranteed that if he wins, they would begin soon after.
The government’s attorneys stated in documents filed with the London High Court in support of a charity challenging the program that the goal was “to effect removals with a flight to Rwanda on 23 July 2024 (and not before)”.
