Incumbent Faizabad MP Lallu Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) conceded defeat to Samajwadi Party candidate Awadhesh Prasad following counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

“Hum aapka samman nahi bacha paaye (we could not save your honour),” the BJP leader said.

This is noteworthy because Ayodhya is part of the Faizabad constituency, and the Ram Temple was a key electoral pitch for the BJP. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, defeated BJP candidate and Uttar Pradesh minister Dinesh Singh to win the Rae Bareli seat today by a margin of 4 lakh votes.

In the meantime, Union Minister Ajay Mishra “Teni” was defeated today by a margin of 25,494 votes in the Kheri constituency in Uttar Pradesh. Utkarsh Verma, a candidate for the Samajwadi Party, defeated him.

Since Ram Mandir was a key component of the BJP’s primary election platform, the party had confidence in Singh to seek a third term from the seat.

One of the main accomplishments of the BJP was the dedication of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. The party went door-to-door informing people of its efforts to secure the temple’s construction after many years.

Notwithstanding Ram Mandir, reports claimed that voters prioritized local concerns above national ones, largely due to an anti-incumbency sentiment toward the incumbent MP. Lallu Singh defeated Anant Sen of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of 65,000 votes in the 2019 election.
