The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) reached its conclusion on Sunday with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registering a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final in Chennai on Sunday.
The Shreyas Iyer-led Knight Riders bundled the high-flying Sunrisers out for a paltry 113 after the latter opted to bat in the summit clash at Chepauk, thanks to a clinical all-round display from their bowling unit. Venkatesh Iyer (52 not out off 26) would then help KKR chase the target down with nearly 10 overs to spare by smashing a 24-ball half-century.

It was the third title for the Knight Riders, with Gautam Gambhir — who currently mentors the side — having previously captained the team to the title in 2012 and 2014 respectively. The Sunrisers, meanwhile, finished runners-up for the second time, with their triumph in the 2016 edition under David Warner’s leadership being their only title till date.
Australian pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were among the key performers in the 17th IPL season for KKR and SRH respectively, the latter replacing Aiden Markram as captain of the ‘Orange Army’. What’s also common between the two besides their primary roles and their nationality is the fact that they also fetched big bucks in the last player auction in Dubai that took place in December.

Cummins had initially become the most expensive player in IPL history after SRH acquired him for Rs 20.5 crore, the Australia Test and ODI captain becoming the first player in the league to breach the 20-crore mark. Starc would surpass him later in the same auction as KKR outbid everyone else to acquire the left-arm quick for Rs 24.75 crore.
