How did Delhi Capitals fare in IPL 2023?
Delhi Capitals had a dreadful IPL 2023 season with a ninth place finish from 10 teams in the competition. Only Sunrisers Hyderabad fared worse than DC in the season. In the group stage, DC remained bottom of the standings for the large part. By the end they picked 10 points with five wins and nine losses from 14 matches.
Delhi looked all but out of contention for the playoffs by losing their first five matches of the season. Two wins in a row helped bring some belief back but it was quickly snapped with consecutive defeats later in the tournament.
Win Percentage: 44.11%
Of the 10 IPL teams that are still active, Delhi Capitals have the worst winning percentage. DC have played 238 matches in IPL history winning 105, losing 127, winning three after ties and losing one after a tie. Two of the matches finished without a result. This racks up their winning percentage at 44.11%. Punjab Kings are the next worst with a winning percentage of 44.82%.
Highest Run-getter: Rishabh Pant (2838 runs)
Despite missing an entire IPL 2023 season, Rishabh Pant leads Delhi’s run-scoring chart with 2838 runs from 97 innings at an average of 34.60. He’s scored one century and 15 fifties with strike rate of 147.96.
Highest wicket taker: Amit Mishra (106 wickets)
Amit Mishra is Delhi Capitals’ leading wicket taker. He played for the franchise from 2008 until 2021 and picked 106 wickets from 99 matches. The veteran spinner possesses an average of 23.65. He has one fifer and two four-fers to his name and an impressive economy rate of 7.35.
Among current DC players, South Africa seamer Anrich Nortje is the highest wicket taker for the franchise with 53 wickets from 40 innings at 24.15. He has an economy rate of 8.32 and strike rate of 17.39.
Highest individual score: Rishabh Pant (128*)
Rishabh Pant holds the record for being Delhi Capitals’ highest scorer in a single inning. Walking in at 21/2 in the four over, Pant hit a whirlwind 128 not out off 63 balls to steer Delhi to 187/5 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in May 2018. However, his efforts went in vain as Shikhar Dhawan (92) and Kane Williamson helped successfully chase the target with seven balls and nine wickets to spare.
Highest team score: 231/4
Powered by David Warner (77 from 48 balls) and Virender Sehwag’s (35-ball 77) half-centuries, Delhi Capitals (then Delhi Daredevils) posted 231/4 against Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) in Delhi. Shaun Marsh led PBKS’ fight with a 46-ball 95 but Punjab fell well short by 29 runs. Warner was adjudged the Player of the Match.
Favourite opponent: Gujarat Lions
Delhi Capitals have their best winning percentage against the now defunct Gujarat Lions. Against the Lions, Delhi won three of four matches. When it comes to head-to-head against active teams, DC’s best record is against Punjab Kings. DC have won 14 of 30 matches vs PBKS.
At the other end, DC have lost all three of their matches against Lucknow Super Giants. Their worst record against long-term IPL members is against Royal Challengers Bangalore - winning just 11 of 31 matches.
