How did Royal Challengers Bangalore fare in IPL 2023?
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had yet another season of mixed fortunes in the IPL last year, before bowing out of the competition in the league stage. RCB managed just seven wins out of 14 games, and finished in sixth place in the standings with 14 points.
RCB began the season with an eight wicket win over Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru, with Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis scoring fifties. However, their inability to defend big totals, including a total of 212 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) cost them big time. Fast forward to the final league match of the season, RCB faced a must-win situation against Gujarat Titans in Bengaluru, and despite a Kohli century that took them to 197, RCB were unable to defend that total as Shubman Gill (104) and Vijay Shankar (53) scripted GT’s six-wicket chase. That meant MI qualified for the playoffs ahead of RCB.
Win percentage: 47.3 %
RCB have played 241 games in the history of IPL and won 114 matches, while losing 120 of those. Four matches have ended in no-results, and RCB have won two games that have gone into the Super Over while one match, against Delhi Daredevils (Now Capitals) in 2013 also went into Super Over but RCB ended up losing that one.
Highest run-getter: Virat Kohli (7263 runs)
RCB’s former captain Virat Kohli is their top run-scorer. Kohli, who scored a record 973 runs in IPL 2016 and has been the constant force for RCB since 2008, has racked up 7263 runs from 237 matches at an average of 3725 and a strike rate of 130.02. This includes seven centuries and 50 half centuries.
Highest wicket-taker: Yuzvendra Chahal (139 wickets)
Yuzvendra Chahal has played for RCB from 2014 till 2021, and he leads the team’s top wicket-takers charts in the IPL with 139 scalps. Chahal had an average of 22.03, and his best figures were 4/25 against Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) in 2016.
Among current players, Mohammed Siraj is the top wicket taker for RCB with 68 wickets from 73 scalps.
Highest individual score: Chris Gayle (175*)
Nobody can forget Chris Gayle’s thunderous knock of 175 not out against the now defunct Pune Warriors India in IPL 2013. He amassed 175 off just 66 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and 17 sixes, and would put his name in the history books with that being the highest individual score for not just RCB, but the tournament overall.
Highest team score: 263/5 vs Pune Warriors India
Not surprisingly, RCB’s highest team score turns out to be in the same match as Chris Gayle’s 175*. Apart from Gayle, Tilakaratne Dilshan (33), and AB de Villiers (31) had scored vital runs to take RCB to 263/5. RCB won the match by 130 runs, restricting Pune Warriors to 133/9.
Favourite opponent: Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals is RCB’s favourite opponent. The two teams have faced off in 30 matches in IPL since 2008, and RCB have won 18 of these matches, including a Super Over win in 2013. RCB have lost only 11 games against DC. That means RCB have a 60 percent win record against DC in IPL.
Bogey team: Chennai Super Kings
RCB have struggled against Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. The two teams have played 31 times in the tournament and RCB have won just 10 of these matches. RCB have lost 20 matches with one game ending in a no-result. As a result, RCB enjoy only a 32 percent win record against CSK in IPL.
