How did Sunrisers Hyderabad fare in IPL 2023?
Sunrisers Hyderabad, with Aiden Markram as captain, had a disappointing IPL season in 2023. They finished rock bottom of the points table with just eight points (Four wins) to their name from 14 matches.
SRH began with defeats to Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants, and while they then defeated Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders, SRH never really fired as their batters faltered on most occasions.
Harry Brook, who had been acquired for Rs 13.25 crore at SRH at the IPL 2023 season, had a rather underwhelming season barring a 55-ball century against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. SRH did collect wins against Delhi Capitals, and then Rajasthan Royals in the reverse fixture, and were never really in the reckoning for the playoffs. They were officially eliminated from IPL 2023 following a 34-run loss to Gujarat Titans in their penultimate league fixture.
Win percentage: 46.98 %
Sunrisers Hyderabad have played 166 games in the IPL since their first season in the tournament back in 2013. They have won 78 matches in total, including a Super Over win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2013. They have, however, lost thrice in Super Overs, with a total of 84 losses in the IPL till date.
Highest run-getter: David Warner (4014 runs)
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) former skipper David Warner is the team’s leading run-getter in IPL. Between 2014 and 2021, Warner has scored a whopping 4014 runs from 95 matches at an average of 49.55 and a strike-rate of 142.59. This includes two centuries and 40 fifties.
Highest wicket-taker: Bhuvneshwar Kumar (146 wickets)
SRH’s long-serving swing bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar stands at the top pf the team’s wicket-takers’ list with 146 scalps since 2014, when he made his SRH debut. His best figures in a match for SRH is 5/19 against Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings) in 2017 which came in a winning cause. Overall, he has two five-wicket hauls and as many four-fers for SRH in the IPL till date, and once again Bhuvneshwar will be crucial to SRH’s chances in IPL 2024.
Highest individual score: David Warner (126 vs KKR in 2017)
David Warner’s 59-ball 126 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Uppal in 2017 remains the highest individual score by an SRH batter. He massed 10 fours and eight sixes during that knock, and had a strike-rate of 213.55. His knock helped SRH post 209/3 after being asked to bat first, a total that the hosts comfortably defended to win the contest by 48 runs.
Highest team score: 231/2 vs RCB in 2019
Early in the 2019 season, SRH posted their highest team score of 231/2 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Hyderabad. Centuries from Jonny Bairstow (114) and David Warner (100*) propelled SRH to the total, with the duo putting up 185 runs for the opening stand. Mohammad Nabi and Sandeep Sharma then shared seven wickets between them to see off RCB for just 113 in the run chase, with SRH thereby winning by 118 runs.
Favourite opponent: Punjab Kings
SRH enjoy a good record against Punjab Kings in the IPL. The two teams have faced off 21 times since 2013, and SRH have won 14 and lost just seven matches, with a win percentage of 66.6.
Bogey team: Chennai Super Kings
SRH have played 19 matches against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) but have only won five matches. They have lost the remaining 14 games, and their last win over CSK was during the 2022 season. Their win percentage against CSK reads a dismal 26%.
