India’s neighbourhood is gearing up to attend caretaker Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, which is likely to be on Saturday, 8 June.
According to reports, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday confirmed their participation in the oath-taking ceremony becoming the first among foreign leaders to do so.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received congratulatory telephone call from his Bangladeshi counterpart for his electoral victory where the two leaders vowed to continue working together to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Smart Bangladesh 2041.
Modi invited Wickremesinghe when the latter called him to congratulate him on his victory.
Among other leaders from the neighbourhood, the leaders of Bhutan, Mauritius and Nepal, are also expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony.
In 2019, leaders from all BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) countries attended Modi’s swearing-in ceremony. The member countries of BIMSTEC include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and India. In 2014, the ceremony happened to be the first ever swearing-in of an Indian Prime Minister to have been attended by the heads of all SAARC countries which included then Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
