Europe is facing a stark reality: its air defences are woefully inadequate. A recent NATO report revealed the alliance has less than 5% of the capability it needs to protect its eastern flank, particularly countries in Central and Eastern Europe bordering Russia. This vulnerability has become a focal point as the war in Ukraine rages on. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been asking for more air defence systems to counter relentless Russian airstrikes. While acknowledging the urgency, NATO has yet to take significant steps to bolster air defences in Eastern Europe. Moreover, Europe's efforts to boost their air defence systems are hampered by internal disagreements. Kremlin advisors are suggesting a "demonstrative" nuclear strike in Ukraine.
